Letter from the Bishop

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Saint Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence in Portland, a mission of the Diocese of Portland. As Christians, we are called to seek out ways in which we can assist our neighbors. Saint Joseph’s has been fulfilling the mission of the Catholic Church by helping the sick and providing a community of caring for body, mind, and spirit since 1975.

Managed by Covenant Health, Saint Joseph’s advances the healing ministry of Jesus through effective nursing care that utilizes innovation and technology while upholding the dignity of all living persons. In April 2016, the facility received the designation of “deficiency free” from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, a distinction of excellence awarded to only 12% of U.S. nursing homes and a further testament to the compassionate and skilled care delivered to patients and residents.

On this website, you can find a multitude of resources describing the many services available at Saint Joseph’s, including:

  • Skilled Care and Rehabilitation Services: The medical/nursing staff and rehabilitation team of licensed physical, occupational, and speech therapists are committed to restoring health and providing patients with the skills needed to transition from the hospital to their homes.
  • Long-Term Care: The facility offers 24-hour licensed nursing care with respect for the quality of life and personal preferences of each resident.
  • Memory Care: A program designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and nurturing environment to serve the needs of those with dementia or memory loss, and to support their loved ones on this difficult journey.

A visit to this website will give you a sense of the staff’s remarkable dedication to those who seek assistance or residency, but I also encourage you to tour the facility and meet the caregivers. The professional and pastoral care you will observe at Saint Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence is defined by compassion and attention to a higher purpose.

Please be assured of my prayers for you and your loved ones.

Most Reverend Robert P. Deeley, J.C.D. Bishop of Portland
